When it comes to West Coast fishing, Kyuquot Sound is truly the sea of plenty!
Why Kyuquot Sound?
Location, location, location!
With waters remote and largely untouched, this Northwest Coast of Vancouver Island is one of the very best sport fishing regions in BC.
The fishing is just simply outstanding in and around Kyuquot Sound. Almost always certain, there are seemingly endless productive fishing grounds as close as two miles from our dock. When we venture further, only as far as 15 miles from the dock at Rugged Point Lodge, we enjoy splendid inshore and offshore fisheries.
Kyuquot Sound lies on the continental shelf’s edge – the perfect environment to support vast schools of migrating Chinook Salmon and Halibut. We border on what is undeniably the most productive fishing grounds in the world.
In this, the optimum current and habitat nicknamed the “Salmon Super Highway“, the various species swim up the gravel shoals teeming with desirable baitfish.
Fishing Kyuquot Sound is a veritable sea of plenty and should top every angler’s bucket list. Flush with Chinook, Halibut, Lingcod, and Sea Bass, it’s nothing short of an endlessly satisfying, not to mention breathtaking, fishing paradise.
Kyuquot Sound – The Fish
Salmon Fishing. Rugged Point Lodge is SO close to abundant salmon fishing grounds – a premier hotspot only two miles from our dock! A short offshore run puts us at 50-fathom edge – the salmon highway.
Salmon is open all season with no salmon closures in our region. We enjoy many different runs of salmon that swim past our local west coast of Vancouver Island rivers to the mouth of the Columbia River.
June through September, we fish for Chinook, and the Coho begin to arrive in August. Most Rugged Point Lodge guests will limit out on Chinook Salmon with Chinook limits at two per day, and total salmon limits 8 per person.
Halibut Fishing. Like salmon, Halibut fishing grounds are wonderfully close, where we enjoy multiple nearby rocks and reefs teeming with the massive fish. Open all season, Halibut fishing opens early in the year, March, and extends well into the autumn.
Fabulous for eating, an average Halibut provides about four nice-sized filets. So abundant in our favourite hotspots, a great catch is often as simple as dropping bait. We get to be selective in the Halibut we keep as, given the size limits, we can target those you prefer (two smaller or one larger, for instance).
Lingcod Fishing. This impressive yet ugly predator fish will bite almost anything you drop on top of them. It’s not unusual to get a bite from a smaller fish that then attracts the bite of a much bigger one – the stubborn little guy refuses to let go! often a small one
Lingcod are plentiful in and around Kyuquot Sound, with many rock piles and reefs from which to jig them quite easily – lots of fun! The limits for Lings are two per day.
