As we wrap up another unforgettable year of BC fishing, we can’t help but reflect on just how incredible 2025 has been.

From the early start of our spring fly fishing on the Upper Columbia River to a summer full of ocean adventures in Kyuquot Sound, and right through to the vibrant fall fishing season, it’s been a year marked by great weather, thriving fisheries, and countless memories shared with guests old and new.

Spring Fishing the Upper Columbia River

Fly Fishing for Rainbow Trout — March to May

We kicked off our year early this season — lines were hitting the water as soon as late March! The spring fly fishing on the Upper Columbia River was nothing short of epic. With clear water, warming temperatures, and incredible insect hatches, the Rainbows were hungry — and our guests were thrilled!

There were days when anglers brought in 20 to 30 fish each, all on the fly. The sheer size and energy of these Rainbows reminded us why the Columbia is one of BC’s most underrated fly fishing gems.

We’re already taking bookings for Spring 2026, and spaces are filling fast. If you’ve been dreaming about casting into those glassy Upper Columbia waters with an expertly tied fly and feeling that telltale tug — now’s the time to plan ahead.

Ocean Fishing Season in Kyuquot Sound

Rugged Point Lodge — June to August

While the Columbia River crew was reeling in Rainbows, Kristy was busy behind the scenes in Kyuquot — bringing a new dream to life. After months of planning and hard work, we officially opened our new fish processing plant just in time for our first June anglers.

This addition has been a game-changer for Rugged Point Lodge guests. We can now process your catch right on site — fillet, portion, vacuum pack, and freeze — so your fish are perfectly prepared for your freezer when you get home. It’s been a long-time goal, and we’re thrilled to finally offer this service.

June & July: Calm Seas and Big Fish

The ocean greeted us with calm, glassy conditions through June and July — ideal for trolling and jigging. Chinook, Halibut, and Lingcod fishing was phenomenal, with consistent catches and satisfied guests heading home with full coolers.

Even better? The Coho arrived early this year, and they stayed all season! Their energy and fight made for unforgettable days on the water.

August: Wind, Waves, and Silver Bullets

August brought a few windy days, but the fishing never slowed down. In fact, we experienced the best Coho fishing we’ve seen in years. The action was non-stop — sometimes we only had to drop our jigs ten feet below the surface before the Coho hit! These silver bullets exploded from the water, leaping and dancing across the waves.

Jigging became the go-to technique this summer, and it produced results for every species — Chinook, Halibut, Lingcod, and especially Coho. With seabirds wheeling overhead, whales breaching in the distance, and sunfish gliding by, the ocean felt alive every single day.

All of our guests hit their limits and took home a bounty of fish to enjoy year-round.

Team Behind the Magical Angling

We couldn’t have done it without our incredible crew and guides. Our fleet got an exciting upgrade this year — we added another Grady White, bringing our total to six:

  • 2 × 28 ft Sailfish
  • 3 × 23 ft Gulfstream
  • 1 × 25 ft Sailfish

Each vessel is run by our experienced local guides: Matt (owner), Kevin and his son Gary, Eugene, Spencer, and Josh. Every one of them brought unmatched skill, enthusiasm, and local knowledge to the water this year — and it showed in the results.

On shore, the Fishing Lodge was smoothly run by our wonderful hostesses, who made sure every guest felt at home from the moment they arrived.

And in the kitchen, our new chef Julie from Costa Rica brought an exciting twist to our dining experience. Her homemade, fresh meals — full of bright flavours and hearty comfort — were a major hit. We look forward to more upon her return to the Fishing Lodge next season!

Behind the scenes, our hardworking dock and fish processing crew — Pilar, Kalla, Toby, Jazmine, and Marie — made sure everything ran like clockwork. They kept the fish flowing, the gear clean, and the smiles constant. A special shoutout goes to Marie, who wore more hats this season than anyone could count — not only working tirelessly on the dock, but also helping in the lodge and the office.

And of course, we can’t forget Maureen — the friendly voice you hear when you call the lodge. She works year-round, taking care of reservations, keeping schedules organized, and making sure every guest is set up for a seamless Rugged Point experience from the very first phone call.

Fall on the Upper Columbia: Colours, Calm, and Rainbow Dreams

September and October — Fly Fishing and Spey Season

When the ocean season wrapped up at the end of August, Matt and the family returned home to the West Kootenays for the fall fishing season on the Upper Columbia River. Autumn on the river is nothing short of spectacular — fiery fall colours reflected on calm waters, crisp mornings, and monster Rainbows ready to strike.

This year, the size of the fish was incredible, and the conditions made for perfect fly fishing days. We’re now offering trips for up to four anglers, making it the perfect experience for small groups or families.

Walleye Fishing Joins the Mix

New this year, Matt also began guiding walleye trips in the fall — and the results were delicious! Fall is the prime time for this fishery, and the walleye didn’t disappoint.

Spey Season with Bruce

Meanwhile, Bruce — our Spey casting specialist — ran his own incredible fall season. Bruce focuses entirely on Spey casting, guiding guests through the art and rhythm of the sport. And his long, elegant casts don’t just look impressive — they consistently reach zones where the big Rainbows live. As a world championship Spey competitor, his skills are unmatched, and his fall dates fill up fast. If you’re looking to refine your Spey game or just try something new, we highly recommend booking early.

Looking Ahead – BC Fishing in 2026

After an exciting year full of new milestones, incredible guests, and unforgettable BC fishing, we’re already looking forward to what’s next. The 2026 spring fly fishing season on the Upper Columbia is open for bookings, and our summer at Rugged Point Lodge will be here before we know it.

Whether you’re chasing Rainbows in the crystal-clear waters of the Columbia River to the teeming Halibut of Kyuquot Sound, 2025 was a year to remember. And, one thing’s for sure — we can’t wait to welcome you back for another year of adventure.

To our returning guests, thank you for another fantastic season. To those planning to join us in 2026 — get ready for an adventure you’ll never forget.
